Why Hakuba, Japan Should Be Your Next Ski Destination

This year, I decided to spend the full ski season in one of the most beautiful places in the world: Hakuba. Located in the Northern Japanese Alps, Hakuba is renowned for steep alpine runs, deep powder bowls, tree skiing, and backcountry areas. For anyone familiar with Japan’s legendary powder, or "Japow" as it's affectionately called, I can confirm that it is absolutely not a myth! Hakuba has received an impressive total of 12 meters (about 39 feet) of snowfall this season, making it a dream destination for powder enthusiasts.
1. Diverse Resorts
The variety of ski resorts in Hakuba Valley ensures that there's always something new to explore. With 9 resorts and numerous runs, skiers can easily hop from one resort to another using shuttle services. This diversity allows skiers to experience a mix of terrain and conditions, from freestyle parks to advanced alpine routes.
2. Variety of Terrain
Hakuba offers a wide range of terrain suitable for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, from beginners to expert backcountry enthusiasts. The valley is home to multiple resorts, each with its unique terrain. From steep alpine lines and tree skiing to mellow, groomed trails, Hakuba has something for everyone. Popular resorts like Happo-One, Tsugaike, Norikura, and Cortina are known for their incredible off-piste sidecountry runs.

3. Backcountry Access
Hakuba is also well-known for its backcountry skiing terrain. The region provides access to vast, untouched terrain, including deep powder fields, alpine bowls, and tree runs. Resorts like Happo-One, Tsugaike and Cortina offer direct access to incredible backcountry lines. With the right gear and experience, adventurers can explore Hakuba’s pristine, untracked snow.
For those new to backcountry skiing or seeking to explore safely, Hakuba offers avalanche courses and guided tours to help you make the most of the terrain.

4. Scenic Beauty
The stunning scenery of the Northern Japanese Alps makes skiing in Hakuba even more amazing. The views from the slopes are absolutely breathtaking, with snow-covered mountains standing tall all around the resorts.

Hakuba offers more than just world-class skiing, it’s a place where nature, culture, and relaxation seamlessly come together. Beyond the slopes, the surrounding mountains are home to incredible wildlife, including the elusive kamoshika (Japanese serow) and the famous snow monkeys. After a thrilling day on the mountain, nothing beats a soak in one of Hakuba’s rejuvenating onsens (hot springs). And let’s not forget the food! Treat yourself to a warming bowl of ramen, savory sukiyaki, or fresh sushi at one of the many cozy local restaurants to refuel for your next adventure.
6. Close Proximity to Major Cities
Hakuba is easily accessible from major Japanese cities, especially Tokyo. It’s only about a 3-4 hour journey by train or bus, making it a super convenient destination. Along the way, you’ll pass through Matsumoto, a city famous for its beautiful Matsumoto Castle. Nagano, known for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics, is a cultural hotspot and home to the iconic Zenko-ji Temple. Itoigawa, a coastal city along the Sea of Japan, offers stunning views of the Japanese Alps and some seriously fresh seafood!
The Gear: Skiing the Surfeur 112
Throughout the season, I skied on the Surfeur 112 (176cm), which was an excellent choice for handling the deep, fluffy powder that Hakuba is so well-known for. The ski performed incredibly well in the backcountry, offering excellent floatation and control through the soft snow. Whether on the steep alpine lines of Happo-One or navigating the perfect trees at Cortina, the Surfeur 112 delivered a great mix of stability and maneuverability, exactly what you need when you're shredding Japan's epic powder.
Ready to ski the best pow of your life?
Hakuba has given me some of the best skiing of my life. If you’re looking for an unforgettable ski experience, this place should be at the top of your list!
