How to Choose Alpine Skis from Resort to Backcountry Skis

Choosing the right skis is essential for an enjoyable skiing experience. Several factors influence this choice, including ski length, weight, and type—each tailored to your skill level and skiing style. Beginners to intermediates should look for skis that are shorter and more flexible, making turns easier and providing greater control. Advanced skiers may prefer longer skis that deliver stability at higher speeds and more power in turns.

Ski length is one of the most crucial factors. Generally, skis should stand between your chin and the top of your head. Shorter skis offer more agility and control, ideal for beginners or those skiing on groomed trails. Longer skis provide stability and are well-suited for powder or off-piste terrain.

Width is another important consideration. Narrower skis, like our Explo 86 with a waist width under 86 mm, are perfect for carving and quick turns on hard-packed snow. Wider skis, such as our Surfeur 112 with a width over 95 mm, excel in deeper snow, offering better float in powder conditions.

Finally, consider your preferred terrain. If you mainly ski at resorts, groomed runs, or enjoy some sidecountry, all-mountain skis, like our Zigzag 92 and Explo 96, offer versatility and perform well in various conditions. For backcountry explorers, freeride skis, such as our Pionnier 104, are an excellent choice.

Remember, the ideal ski choice depends on personal preferences, skill level, and terrain. If you have any doubts, use our Ski Finder or contact us—we’d be happy to help find the right skis for you and recommend where to try them this winter.
