The SL-free 74 in detail

The SL-free 74 is a high-performance ski designed for groomed trails and icy conditions. Slightly oversized compared to typical slalom skis, it’s built to link tight, dynamic turns while remaining playful and easy to initiate. It delivers control, precision, and confidence to the skier, whether at low or high speeds.

When skied with a more aggressive style, the SL-free 74 responds with intensity, power, and a well-balanced rebound at the end of each turn. This new model features a construction that includes a maple wood core and two layers of aluminum reinforcement, providing excellent edge grip and stability.

Stiffness profiles

At Ferreol, every ski is measured, not just described. We publish the actual curves of the SL-free 74, flex and torsion, in Nm², because they tell you exactly how the ski behaves underfoot, at the tip, and at the tail. Where most brands stop at "stiff" or "flexible," we provide the complete data. This is our engineering, exposed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the SL-free 74 and the Explo 86?

These are two skis designed for groomed trails and hard snow. The SL-free 74 is the most aggressive ski in the range on hard snow, while the Explo 86 is designed to perform well across the entire mountain (on hard snow, in glades, and for alpine touring).

  • The SL-free 74 is more performance-oriented for carving on groomed slopes, stiffer, more precise, and designed for fast, tight turns.
  • The Explo 86 is more versatile across the entire mountain and easier to ski in all kinds of trail and snow conditions. It's perfectly suited for light powder, glades, and alpine touring due to its lightness and all-terrain performance. The Explo 86 is better suited for a beginner skier than the SL-free 74, as it is a bit easier to ski and turn.
  • The SL-free 74 is narrower and more specialized for on-piste performance, while the Explo 86 is an all-mountain ski with a piste-oriented focus.
Is this ski suitable if I also sometimes ski off-piste or in soft snow?

More or less. While the SL-free 74 is a pure piste ski, it is slightly wider than several other models of the same type (which is why we added the word Free to its name). Its rigid construction (maple core + two layers of Scalium®) makes it ideal for hard/icy snow, and its 74 mm width allows it to navigate through sometimes soft snow. However, as soon as the snow becomes deep, it sinks and becomes difficult to maneuver. For a skier who also does off-piste, the Explo 86 or Explo 96 would be much more versatile.

Can I use these skis for alpine touring or telemarking?

The SL-free 74 is not designed for alpine touring, but it can be very suitable for telemark skiing. Its construction allows for very good screw retention for all types of bindings. The SL-free 74 is designed for precise and aggressive descents on groomed and hard snow. For classic alpine touring, we recommend the Explo 86 or the Explo 96. These 2 options are lightweight for ascents and perform well on descents.

For what size skier do you recommend each ski length?
